Sample Drama Game 4

MOVEMENT GAMES

SAMPLE GAME: I GET AROUND

Movement drama games are all about interacting bodies and expressing yourself with action, not just words. They are quite physical and work well in an empty space. They are a good way for students to explore body language and how they express themselves with movement, learning how even a walk can say a lot about a character.

The sample game below plays with modes of transport and the actions involved with those. The others in the book Top 50 Drama Games Unpacked are all very physical, creating Machines, trying out different walks in Walk This Way, and Entrances And Exits, with Trapped And Entangled the final game.

I GET AROUND

BASIC DESCRIPTION

This is played in pairs, though more players can be called on if wanted. One player starts and begins to act out a mode of transport, they talk and move and add sounds if needed, without naming the car or bus or whatever they have chosen. The second player joins them after 15-20 seconds and adds to the idea, helping us believe they really are on a bus, or riding on a surfboard etc. The rest of the class guess after a minute of action. The players are not making the form of transport with their bodies and miming it, they are characters using it. Remind them to focus on who would use this and how.

HELPFUL HINTS

The younger students sometimes have trouble thinking of different ways of getting around, so you can give slip of paper or whisper an option for them. They like a few seconds to talk and plan together. With older students, the second of the pair has no idea what their partner will chose to do.

It’s a good idea to have a few chairs on stage, or just to the side, or stage boxes ready to improvise with. If the students pick something like an airplane, they can call up another pair or two during their act (allow them a little extra time) to add more characters on the plane.
